However you want to travel
Tailor-made retreats
Every journey we run is built from scratch around one brief. There is no catalogue to choose from — there never was.
How we work
Everything here is tailor-made
Most travel companies offer fixed departures with a tailor-made option bolted on for people willing to pay extra. We work the other way round. There is no set programme to deviate from, because nothing is set until you tell us what you want.
That means the dates are yours, the pace is yours, and the shape follows what you actually care about rather than what fills a coach. If you want three days of nothing in the middle of a fortnight, we build three days of nothing. If you want to skip a famous site because it does not interest you, we skip it and use the time somewhere better.
It also means the first conversation matters more than anything else. The rest is craft.
In practice
Three briefs, three journeys
Abstract promises are easy. Here is what tailor-made actually produced for three guests, in their words and ours.
"I've just come out of a very hard eighteen months at work. I don't want sightseeing. I want to be looked after and I want to sleep properly again."
Sixteen days in Kerala, almost all of it stationary
We did not build a route. We placed her in one certified ayurvedic centre near Marari for fourteen nights, with a full consultation on arrival and a prescribed programme running throughout — abhyanga daily, shirodhara from day four, and a diet cooked to her constitution.
The only travel was two nights in Fort Kochi at the end, once she wanted the world back. No excursions were scheduled at all. Her one request in week two was for a second pillow, which we take as the trip having worked.

"Four of us, two teenagers. My husband wants to trek, I really don't, and the kids will complain about temples. Twelve days in Nepal. Good luck."
A Nepal route that split, then rejoined
Four days in the Kathmandu valley first, with a Newari craftsman in Bhaktapur rather than a temple tour — the teenagers ended up throwing pots for two hours. Then Chitwan for three nights, canoe and grassland walks, which settled the wildlife question for everyone.
In Pokhara the group divided: husband and elder son took a three-day foothill trek with a guide, while the others stayed lakeside with paragliding, a cooking class and a great deal of not walking. Everyone reconvened for a final two nights and a dawn mountain flight.

"My mother died last year. She always talked about the Ganga. I'd like to go, and I'd like to not be on a group tour when I do."
Rishikesh to Varanasi, entirely private
Six nights in Rishikesh first — daily hatha with a teacher we have worked with for years, and deliberately empty afternoons. The point was to arrive at Varanasi already quiet rather than jolted into it.
Then four nights on the ghats with a guide who grew up in those lanes, a rowed boat at dawn on two mornings, and a private diya offering arranged at a smaller ghat away from the crowds. No fixed schedule after midday on any day. She asked us to change almost nothing.

What we ask
The questions that shape a route
Dates and destination are the easy part. What actually determines the plan is softer: how you feel about early mornings, whether you would rather see three places properly or seven quickly, how much silence you want, and what you have found exhausting about travel before.
We also ask what you do not want. It is often more useful. Guests who say plainly that they hate group meals, or cannot face another fort, or want no photographs taken of them, get better trips than those who politely say everything sounds lovely.
Tell us what you'd rather skip. That sentence builds better routes than any wish list.

Who you travel with
Private guides, chosen individually
On a tailor-made journey you are not assigned whoever is free. We match guides to the trip — the craftsman in Bhaktapur, the tracker in Periyar, the man in Varanasi who can tell you which doorway leads where because he was born behind it.
Drivers are private throughout, which sounds like a comfort detail and is really a freedom one. It means the day can change at eleven in the morning without anybody consulting a schedule.
From first message to departure
No pressure, no sales sequence, and nothing confirmed until the shape is genuinely right. Here is the whole process, including how long each part takes.
Tell us roughly what you want
Dates or a season, how long, who is travelling, and what you are hoping the trip will be. Nothing needs to be decided. A planner reads it and replies within one working day, usually with questions rather than a quote.
A first route
A day-by-day outline with accommodation, guides, transfers and an honest note on how each day will feel. Not a brochure — a working document with reasoning attached, including why we left certain things out.
We rebuild it as often as needed
Swap a city, extend the wellness section, add a rest day, change the whole thing. Most journeys go through two or three versions. There is no charge for revisions and no limit on them.
Deposit and booking
Once the route is right, a deposit secures everything and we book stays, guides and internal flights. Full documentation follows — permits, visa guidance, packing notes specific to your route and season.
Final pack, and your contacts
Complete itinerary, every confirmation, local coordinator numbers for each destination and a single point of contact reachable throughout. Sent two weeks before departure.
Someone reachable, always
Local coordinators on the ground in each place and a contact who knows your itinerary. A cancelled flight or a change of plan becomes our problem to solve rather than yours.

What we will not build, whatever the brief
Tailor-made does not mean anything goes. There are a small number of things we decline regardless of who asks. We do not book elephant riding or any venue offering elephant shows, painting or bathing sessions. We do not photograph or take groups into the burning ghats at Varanasi. We do not arrange visits to hill-tribe villages run as human zoos, or orphanage tourism in any form.
We also decline itineraries that are simply too compressed to work — Everest Base Camp in nine days, panchakarma in three, four Indian states in a week. We will explain why, offer an alternative, and if you would still rather do it, recommend you find another operator. That is not us being difficult; it is us not wanting to sell you a bad trip.
Everything else is genuinely open. The stranger the brief, usually the better the journey.
Who it suits
Built for a particular kind of traveller
Not everyone needs tailor-made. These are the people for whom it makes the biggest difference.
Anyone with a constraint
Limited mobility, dietary needs, a fear of flying, a partner who wants something different, dates that cannot move, or a condition that changes what is possible. Constraints are exactly what fixed departures handle badly and tailor-made handles well.
Families and small groups
Travelling with teenagers, or with parents in their seventies, or with friends who want different things from the same fortnight. Private journeys can split and rejoin, which no group tour can do.
Returning travellers
If you have already done the obvious circuit, tailor-made is how you get past it — the second-tier towns, the region nobody schedules, the fortnight in one valley instead of five cities.
Questions
Planning a tailor-made journey
Is tailor-made more expensive than a group tour?
Per person, usually yes — you are not sharing a guide and vehicle with fifteen others. But the gap narrows considerably with four or more travelling, and a well-built private route often costs less than a comparable luxury group departure. Tell us a budget and we will work within it or say honestly that we cannot.
How far ahead should I start?
Three to six months is comfortable. Peak season in Ladakh, Bhutan and the Kerala ayurvedic centres books further out, and yoga teacher training courses run to fixed calendars months ahead. We have built good trips in three weeks, but the choice of guides and rooms narrows sharply.
Can I change things once I've booked?
Small changes, usually yes — swapping an activity, adjusting a departure time, adding a night. Larger changes depend on what has been confirmed and what cancellation terms apply, and we will always tell you the cost before making any change.
What if I don't know where I want to go?
That is a perfectly normal starting point. Tell us what you want the trip to feel like — stillness, walking, culture, recovery — and roughly when you can travel, and we will suggest two or three destinations that fit and explain the difference between them.
Do you charge for planning?
No. Route design and revisions before booking are included, however many versions it takes. We only earn once you travel, which is deliberate — it means we have no reason to push a route you are lukewarm about.
Can you combine countries?
Frequently, and the pairings are often the best trips. Nepal with Bhutan, Kerala with Sri Lanka, Thailand with Cambodia, Rishikesh with Varanasi. We will be honest when a combination costs more in transit than it delivers.
What if something goes wrong while I'm travelling?
You have local coordinators in each destination and a single named contact who knows your itinerary. Delayed flights, closed roads, a change of plan — that is what they are there for. We also build buffer days into routes involving weather-dependent mountain flights.
Start with a sentence
You don't need dates, a destination or a plan. Tell us what you want the trip to feel like and we'll take it from there.
