Section 01

Planning, Booking & Customization

For custom private journeys, we recommend reaching out 3 to 6 months in advance. This allows us to secure access permits for restricted heritage zones, arrange private sessions with lineage masters, and confirm bookings at intimate boutique heritage estates with very limited room inventories (often fewer than 8 to 12 rooms).

For peak travel seasons (such as the Himalayan summer in Ladakh from June–September or the cooler dry months in Southeast Asia from November–March), planning 6 to 9 months ahead is ideal.

Yes, absolutely. Every itinerary featured on Real Retreats serves as a master framework. We routinely calibrate journeys specifically for solo seekers seeking deep contemplative solitude, couples wanting private romantic sanctuaries, or multi-generational families requiring varied physical pacing and private pavilions.

Our pricing is completely transparent with zero hidden fees or forced commercial stops. Standard bespoke quotes include:

  • All luxury heritage, eco-sanctuary, or boutique lodge accommodations with daily breakfast and curated traditional meals.
  • Dedicated private chauffeured transport in spacious, sanitized, climate-controlled vehicles with experienced mountain or regional drivers.
  • Exclusive pre-opening or private sanctuary permits, conservation entry fees, and private boat charters.
  • Direct fair-trade honorariums for master artisans, scholar epigraphers, and monastery elders.
  • 24/7 dedicated ground concierge and specialist host accompaniment.

Exclusions: International airfare, personal travel insurance, visa fees, and discretionary personal tips.

Upon final approval of your customized itinerary, a 30% non-refundable deposit is required to secure lodging reservations, private permits, and artisan bookings. The remaining 70% balance is due 60 days prior to departure.

If you need to reschedule, we make every reasonable effort to transfer your deposit to future travel dates within a 12-month window, subject to any direct non-recoverable supplier fees.

We do not issue international flight tickets, allowing you maximum flexibility to use preferred airline miles or loyalty programs. However, we advise on the exact arrival/departure flight timings, coordinate all domestic regional charter flights, and provide formal itinerary confirmation letters required for your e-Visa applications.

Section 02

Philosophy, Daily Pacing & The Experience

Most commercial luxury operators prioritize checklist tourism: rushing guests through famous monuments during peak hours, staging manufactured cultural encounters, and herding travellers into commercial souvenir shops.

Real Retreats is founded on receptive, slow-paced travel. We access sacred spaces at dawn before gates open, spend multiple unhurried hours sitting beside master craftsmen in their private family compounds, and honor the sacred silence of holy places. We measure a journey's success by the depth of your presence, not the number of monuments checked off.

Our days are designed with a natural ebb and flow:

  • Dawn Stillness (6:00 – 9:00 AM): Private early-morning sanctuary entry or riverside contemplation in the golden light.
  • Lineage Encounters (10:00 AM – 1:00 PM): Intimate workshops with living craft masters, epigraphers, or monastery philosophers.
  • The Midday Pause (1:30 – 4:30 PM): Unhurried herbal lunch followed by personal space for journaling, spa rituals, or restful reading during the warmest hours.
  • Twilight Reflections (5:30 – 8:30 PM): Sunset boat journeys, rooftop temple discourses, or farm-to-table culinary dinners under the stars.

Our cultural journeys are designed with an unhurried, gentle cadence and can be calibrated to your exact physical comfort. While ancient temple complexes and village alleys do involve walking on uneven cobblestones or steps, we always provide comfortable rest breaks, shade, and alternative access points.

For high-altitude Himalayan retreats (such as Ladakh or Bhutan), we build in 48 hours of mandatory acclimatization at serene valley estates with gentle walks before venturing further.

A "Living Lineage" is a traditional artistic, architectural, or spiritual practice that has been handed down continuously across generations — such as Chola lost-wax bronze casting in Tamil Nadu, 5th-generation hand-block printing in Bagru, golden raw silk sericulture in Takeo, or Tantric philosophy in Ladakh.

We do not visit tourist demonstration centres. You spend authentic time inside the working studios and home compounds of master practitioners who are recognized guardians of intangible UNESCO cultural heritage.

Section 03

Lodging, Comfort & Gastronomy

We hand-select boutique sanctuaries that embody the architectural soul of the region while delivering world-class hospitality standards:

  • Restored Heritage Palaces & Havens: 18th-century Rajput fortresses, Chettinad mansions, and French colonial riverfront villas.
  • Eco-Tented Wilderness Sanctuaries: Luxury canvas tented lodges nestled in protected rainforest corridors and Himalayan high-altitude valleys.
  • Monastery & Tea Estate Refuges: Restored colonial planters' bungalows and tranquil pavilions surrounded by organic gardens.

We actively avoid anonymous glass-and-steel chain hotels in favor of properties offering authentic character, spacious private terraces, and deeply rooted local warmth.

Gastronomy is a cornerstone of our cultural immersions. We cater effortlessly to vegetarian, vegan, Jain, gluten-free, dairy-free, and specific allergy profiles.

Our meals showcase clean, farm-to-table regional cuisine: hand-ground heirloom spice curries, slow-steamed botanical infusions, wild river herbs, and organic heritage grains sourced directly from local agricultural cooperatives.

All our partner boutique properties provide dependable high-speed Wi-Fi in guest rooms and common areas. While travelling between destinations, we can supply private 4G/5G mobile hotspot devices if you need to stay connected.

For guests seeking a conscious digital detox, we can also curate entirely disconnected retreat days in deep mountain or river sanctuaries.

Section 04

Ethics, Sacred Etiquette & Reciprocity

We work exclusively through established, multi-year relationships of trust. We never arrive unannounced or turn sacred ceremonies into spectator events. Your journey host briefs you on local customs, greetings (such as the wai or namaskar), and respectful seating etiquette before every encounter.

We also pay generous, direct financial honorariums to the monasteries and community funds to support elderly care, scripture conservation, and novice monk education.

As a sign of reverence, sacred spaces require shoulders and knees to be covered for both men and women. Loose, lightweight linen or cotton shirts and full-length trousers or skirts are ideal for comfort in warm climates.

Footwear and hats are removed before stepping onto sanctum thresholds. We recommend slip-on footwear and carry clean cotton socks for hot stone surfaces.

Photography is welcomed in outer courtyards and open architectural areas. However, inside inner sanctums, during active tantric prayers, or when receiving water blessings, we ask guests to lower cameras and experience the moment fully with their own eyes. Your host will always advise when photography is permitted and when reverent silence is requested.

A designated percentage of every journey is channelled directly into our Living Heritage Fund, which finances apprenticeship grants for young weavers, woodcarvers, and bronze sculptors to ensure ancestral crafts remain economically viable. We eliminate all intermediaries so that artisan families receive 100% of their craft value.

Section 05

Safety, Health & Travel Logistics

Yes. Over 40% of our travellers are solo individuals, with many being solo women seeking peaceful cultural and contemplative exploration. From the moment you land at the airport, you are met by a vetted private chauffeur and dedicated host who remain on call around the clock.

We select secure, gated boutique sanctuaries and provide private escort on all excursions, ensuring complete peace of mind, privacy, and personal autonomy throughout your stay.

Your physical wellbeing is safeguarded at every step:

  • All private vehicles carry sealed UV-filtered or bottled spring water and comprehensive medical first-aid kits.
  • Partner properties adhere to rigorous international food safety and reverse-osmosis water purification standards.
  • For high-altitude regions (Ladakh/Himalayas), private vehicles carry portable medical oxygen concentrators and pulse oximeters.
  • We maintain direct 24/7 on-call access to top private regional hospitals and English-speaking consulting physicians.

Yes. We require all guests to hold comprehensive international travel insurance that includes emergency medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and luggage protection. We are happy to recommend trusted global providers (such as Allianz Global Assistance, World Nomads, or Medjet) during your trip finalization.

Yes. Approximately 4 weeks prior to your departure, you will receive our comprehensive Journey Dossier. This includes destination-specific packing lists, reading and cinema recommendations, regional etiquette nuances, currency notes, and emergency direct contact numbers for your personal journey team.
